Created by the same studio that produced Come And See, The Star is an action packed war adventure that has been favourable compared with recent Hollywood depictions of war and inhumanity. Set during the end of the Second World War, on the Polish front separating the Russian and German armies, 'Star' is the call sign for a Russian scout unit being sent behind enemy lines to spy on troop movements in the knowledge that two such units have already been dispatched and vanished without trace. Almost from the start the film is charged with tension as the scouts use their tracking skills to avoid detection and their killing prowess to exterminate obstacles in their way, leading to an almost unbearable climax. The authenticity of the production is clear and the cast, including Alexei Kravchenko, the star of Come and See, manages to maintain the tension without resorting to Hollywood style dramatics. Winning many awards domestically, this Russian film is now deservedly enjoying international exposure. Making A Case For Murder. On a cold December night in 1986, three black men sought refuge in a small restaurant. What happened that night shocked the entire city of New York. A group of white teenagers cornered the three black men and attacked them with tree limbs and a baseball bat. One of the black men required sixty six stitches to close his wounds. His stepson was not so lucky, he was chased onto a nearby highway and killed by a passing car. Was it murder, or just a party that gotten out of hand? Did the police act properly or did they intentionally allow the white murderer to drive away? These were the questions that were about to make the city of New York erupt in racial violence. Almost a quarter of a century ago Harnoncourt presented his reading of this rediscovered work on CD, but in this version from the Zurich Opera directed by well-known Austrian actor Tobias Moretti, the great Mozart magician conducted a staged production for the first time in an acclaimed production recorded live in February 2006. The Zurich Opera gathered a superb cast for this production: Italian soprano Eva Mei sings the Countess Violante, known as Sandrina, the feigned gardener of the title. Spanish soprano Isabel Rey is her opponent Arminda, and Arminda's former lover, the melancholy Cavaliere Ramiro, is sung by Romanian mezzo Liliana Nikiteanu.
