ITALY AT THE PEACE OF CALTABELLOTTA 1302 January 2nd 2005 By Gianni Vacca (Italia a la pau de Caltabellotta (1302)). Reproduced courtesy of Gianni Vacca. The Caltabellotta Machiavelli scenario begins in 1302. This period saw the definitive end of Holy Roman Imperial dominance over italian matters and the emergence of new regional powers like Aragon, the House of Anjou and the House of Visconti. Machiavelli Classic Setup The powers and their initial starting locations and owned provinces are: G: Genoa F-Corsica, F-Durazzo, A-Genova H: Holy Empire A-Austria, F-Carniola, A-Swiss, G-Tyrol, Carinthia I: Milan A-Cremona, A-Milan, A-Pavia, Bergamo, Brescia*, Como, Parma Piacenza*, Verona, Vicenza* V: Venice F-Dalmatia, G-Ragusa, G-Venice, Istria N: Naples A-Marseille, Provence A-Bari, A-Naples, Aquila, Capua, Otranto, Salerno F (nc*)-Croatia, A-Hungary, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Slavonia S: Aragon F-Palermo, F-Sardinia, G-Messina x: Autonomous Garrisoned fortified cities: G-Ancona, G-Arezzo, G-Bologna, G-Ferrara, G-Florence, G-Lucca G-Mantua, G-Modena, G-Montferrat, G-Padua, G-Perugia G-Piombino, G-Pisa, G-Rome, G-Saluzzo, G-Savoy, G-Siena G-Trent, G-Treviso, G-Turin Garrisoned fortresses*: G-Fornova, G-Patrimony, G-Romagna, G-Spoleto, G-Tivoli G-Urbino * Ignore in play with Machiavelli 2 map. Note that the single letter abbreviations for Milan, I, is the second letter of the name rather than the first to avoid conflicts with the Master (GM). Special rules: The fortresses are used in this scenario. All unowned are garrisoned. These provinces are impassable: Avignon and Tunis. Aragon, the Holy Roman Empire, Naples and Milan have one die roll each for variable income. HRE uses the Austria die rolls. Aragon rolls are as follows: 2 2 3 3 4 5. Genoa and Venice have two die rolls each for variable income. Genoa uses the Genoa city die rolls. The player(s) controlling Florence or Rome city gain one die roll per city for variable income. Optional setups: OPTION: For the 3-5 player setups. The player controlling Genoa city gains one die roll for variable income. (This is not mentioned in the original rules.) * = Ignore in play with Machiavelli 2 map. Seven players This is not mentioned in the original rules but added by me as the Kingdom of Naples and the Kingdom of Hungary were ruled by different branches of the House of Anjou. Hungary actually by a boy king and not until 1308. N: Naples A-Marseille, Provence A-Bari, A-Naples, Aquila, Capua, Otranto, Salerno Y: Hungary F (nc*)-Croatia, A-Hungary, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Slavonia A-Albania Hungary has one die roll for variable income. Use the Turkey rolls. Five players Dump Genoa. Add neutral garrisons in Genoa and Durazzo. Four players Dump Genoa and HRE. Add neutral garrisons in Genoa, Durazzo, Austria and Tyrol. Three players -- Guelfs versus Ghibellines This is essence a completely new scenario! V: Venice F-Dalmatia, G-Ragusa, G-Venice, Istria, G-Messina, F-Palermo U: Guelfs G-Bari, A-Naples, Aquila, Capua, Otranto, Salerno G-Rome, Patrimony, Tivoli*, F-Corsica, A-Genova H: Ghibellines A-Austria, F-Carniola, A-Swiss, G-Tyrol, Carinthia A-Cremona, A-Milan, A-Pavia, Bergamo, Brescia*, Como, Parma, Piacenza*, Verona, Vicenza* A-Arezzo, F-Pisa x: Autonomous Garrisoned fortified cities: G-Ancona, G-Bologna, G-Ferrara, G-Florence, G-Lucca, G-Mantua G-Modena, G-Montferrat, G-Padua, G-Perugia, G-Piombino, G-Saluzzo, G-Savoy, G-Siena, G-Trent, G-Treviso, G-Turin Garrisoned fortresses*: G-Fornova, G-Romagna, G-Spoleto, G-Urbino Note 1: The addition of neutral garrisons on *all* unowned fortified cities and fortressess is not mentioned in the original rules. I have assumed the intention to be as for the 6-player setup and added it for clarification. All powers have one dice roll for variable income. Guelfs use the Papacy/Rome roll, while the Ghibellines use the Austrian. The player controlling Florence city gains one die roll for variable income. Note 2: City income for the 3-player scenario is not mentioned, but to solve the contradiciton regarding Rome city VI usage. I used is as the Guelf roll, that being a practical solution and also, in a sense, 'historical'. Note 3: The original rules do also not mention what units are to be setup in Messina, Palermo and Ghibelline lands (except Arezzo and Pisa). I have assumed the intention to be as for the 6-player setup. These provinces are impassable: Avignon, Durazzo, Hungary, Marseille, Provence, Slavonia and Tunis. Machiavelli 2 Assume that the initial treasury is any surplus remaining after the initial maintenance costs, else it is zero. Default victory conditions: The first player to control at least 15 cities and have control of at least two power's original home countries (eg: his own and one other player's) is declared the winner. ----- * Avalon Hill, Machiavelli and Diplomacy are trademarks of Hasbro Inc.
