ITALY AT THE PEACE OF CHATEAU CAMBRESIS 1559 January 2nd 2005 By Gianni Vacca (Italia a la pau de Cateau-Cambresis (1559)). Reproduced courtesy of Gianni Vacca. The Chateau Cambresis Machiavelli scenario begins in 1559. The major italian states have consolidated their power and the french seem to have definitively been kicked out of italian politics by the spanish. But the abdication of Emperor Charles V open a new window of opportunity for the french. As for the Ottoman, nobody seemed able to stop them. Machiavelli Classic Setup The powers and their initial starting locations and owned provinces are: S: Spain A-Milan, A-Pavia, Como, Fornovo, Piacenza* A-Bari, G-Messina, F-Naples, F-Palermo, Aquila, Otranto, Salerno A-Cremona, F-Sardinia A: Austria** A-Austria, A-Trent, A-Tyrol, Carinthia V: Venice G-Cremona, F-Dalmatia, A-Padua, A-Treviso, G-Venice, Bergamo, Brescia*, Friuli, Istria, Verona, Vicenza* G-Durazzo, T: Ottoman A-Albania, A-Hungary, G-Tunis, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Slavonia F-Durazzo F: France A-Avignon, F-Marseille, A-Swiss, G-Saluzzo, Provence L: Florence A-Arezzo, A-Florence, F-Pisa, A-Siena, Pistoia P: Papacy F-Ancona, A-Bologna, A-Perugia, A-Rome, Capua, Patrimony, Romagna*, Spoleto, Tivoli*, Urbino I: Milan Begins as a spanish conquered home country. (A-Milan, A-Pavia, Como, Fornovo, Piacenza*) N: Naples Begins as a spanish conquered home country. (A-Bari, G-Messina, F-Naples, F-Palermo, Aquila, Otranto, Salerno) x: Autonomous G-Ferrara, G-Genova, G-Lucca, G-Mantua, G-Modena, G-Montferrat, G-Piombino, G-Ragusa, G-Savoy, G-Turin * Ignore in play with Machiavelli 2 map. ** Called Holy Roman Empire at this position of the original text, but Austria everywhere else. Note that the single letter abbreviations for Milan, I, and Florence, L, are the second letter of the name rather than the first to avoid conflicts with the Master (GM) and France. Special rules: The fortresses are *not* used in this scenario. Austria, France, Papacy, Ottoman, Milan and Naples have one die roll each for variable income. Florence, Spain and Venice have two die rolls each for variable income. The player controlling Genoa city gains one die roll for variable income. Note 1: The original rules say nothing about what happens with Spains variable income when it looses Milan or Naples. I have chosen to let the player conquering any of them gain one VI die, while letting the spanish player keeping his two dice. Alternatively you may choose to have Spain loose one die per lost home country part, as that is in line with the game mechanics. Sardinia, Cremona and Durazzo are not part of any players home country. Milan and Naples can be conquered separately (see setup for definition), as Spain consists of two separate home countries. Note 2: As Spain is made up of Milan and Naples and Sardinia, I choose to make Sardinia not part of Spain, to avoid the unbalancing situation with a home country consisting of one province and having 2 die rolls up for grabs. (This is not in the original rules.) Optional setups: Six players Dump Austria. Add neutral garrisons in Trent and Tyrol. Austria is impassable. Five players Dump Austria and France. Add neutral garrisons in Saluzzo, Trent and Tyrol. Austria, Avignon, Marseille and Provance are impassable. Machiavelli 2 Assume that the initial treasury is any surplus remaining after the initial maintenance costs, else it is zero. Default victory conditions: The first player to control at least 15 cities and have control of at least two power's original home countries (eg: his own and one other player's) is declared the winner. ----- * Avalon Hill, Machiavelli and Diplomacy are trademarks of Hasbro Inc.
