THE CORONATION OF EMPEROR CHARLES V 1529-1530 January 1st 2005 Copyright Ludopress, Alea 22 page 12 (La Coronacion de Carlos V). Published with permission. Note: the main goal of the scenario is historicity and not playability. The Charles V Machiavelli scenario begins in 1529. Austria has set up a grand alliance with most of the italian and european states and has thus a chance to unify and conquer the whole of Italy. Machiavelli Classic Setup The powers and their initial starting locations and owned provinces are: A: Austria A-Milan, A-Tyrolea, Austria, Carniola, Carinthia, Hungary A-Ferrara, A-Genoa, A-Lucca, A-Siena, A-Swiss F: France A-Avignon, F-Marseille, A-Savoy, Provence N: Naples F-Bari, A-Naples, A-Palermo, F-Messina, Aquila, Capua, Otranto, Salerno P: Papacy F-Ancona, A-Bologna, A-Perugia, A-Rome, Patrimony, Romagna*, Spoleto, Tivoli*, Urbino L: Florence A-Florence, F-Pisa, A-Arezzo, Pistoia V: Venice F-Dalmatia, A-Padua, A-Treviso, Bergamo, Brescia*, Friuli, Istria, Venice, Verona, Vicenza* T: Ottoman A-Bosnia, F-Durazzo, F-Tunis, Albania, Herzegovina x: Autonomous Garrisoned fortified cities: G-Cremona, G-Mantua, G-Modena, G-Montferrat, G-Pavia, G-Piombino, G-Ragusa, G-Saluzzo, G-Turin, Note: the suggestions below are not part of the original rules. * Ignore in play with Machiavelli 2 map. Note that the single letter abbreviations for Florence, L, is the second letter of the name rather than the first to avoid conflicts with France. Special rules: The fortresses are *not* used in this scenario. Ferrara, Genoa, Lucca, Siena, Swiss are not part of the Austrian home. France is not allowed to *build*, but may buy by bribery, elite professional units, as Swiss is not part of France's home country. Note: the bribery part was not mentioned in the original rules, but also not forbidden. And allowing it is more in line with the 'game flavour'. Austria and France have two die rolls each for variable income. All other powers have one die roll each. Any power, *except Austria*, controlling Milan city gain one die roll for variable income. Any power controlling Genoa city gain one die roll for variable income. Note: The genoese VI status is not mentioned in the original rules. But as Milan is explicitly mentioned I have assumed that Genoa is treated as per the normal Machiavelli rules. Any player with a fleet in EGOL may stop any attempt at besiegeing Genoa. This is done by issuing the Interrupt Siege of Genova order in the 2nd siege turn. The effects are that the besiegeing unit's order reverts to Hold, unless the fleet is forced to retreat -- then the siege succeeds. Note 1: The original rules do not mention if the player having the possibilty to besiege, is to know this in advance, or if the orders are resolved simultaneously. I have assumed the latter. Because of that and to solve the issues with effects I did also add the order revert to hold rule. Note 2: The original rules do also not mention if this order is broken if the fleet is attacked or attacked and forced to retreat. I have treated it as a convoy order, thus allowing it unless forced to retreat. You may want to treat it as a support and let it be broken by an attack. Option 1: Let the fleet owner also be able to try to interrupt the siege in the first turn. (I.e. stop it from starting.) Option 2: It is also not stated in the original rules if the fleet is allowed to do anything else in addition to disrupting the siege. You may allow the fleet to convoy or support another unit in addition to interrupting the siege. Thus the interrupt order cannot be broken, only the standard order. Machiavelli 2 Assume that the initial treasury is any surplus remaining after the initial maintenance costs, else it is zero. Note: In the original text there are no provisions for play with the Mach2 map and rules, nor for play with less powers/players. Default victory conditions: The first player to control at least 15 cities and have control of at least two power's original home countries (eg: his own and one other player's) is declared the winner. ----- * Avalon Hill, Machiavelli and Diplomacy are trademarks of Hasbro Inc.
