THE DECLINE OF MILAN 1402-1425 October 18th 2004 Copyright Ludopress, Alea 22 page 10 (El ocaso milanes). Published with permission. Note: the main goal of the scenario is historicity and not playability. The fall of Milan Machiavelli scenario begins in 1402. At the death of Gian Galeazzo Visconti the Duchy of Milan was at its apex. Venice and Florence, alarmed of the milanese might, take this as an opportunity to ally and begin war against Milan. At the same time France and Aragon fight for control over southern Italy, and the Ottoman ("turk") continue their advance. Machiavelli Classic Setup The powers and their initial starting locations and owned provinces are: F: France A-Avignon, F-Marseille, Provence, Swiss A-Bari, A-Naples, Aquila, Capua, Salerno S: Aragon F-Palermo, F-Sardinia, Messina T: Ottoman A-Albania, F-Durazzo, F-Tunis, Bosnia, Herzegovina P: Papacy G-Ancona, A-Rome, Patrimony, Tivoli* L: Florence* A-Florence, Pistoia, Arezzo I: Milan A-Bologna, A-Cremona, A-Milan, A-Verona, Bergamo, Brescia*, Como, Fornovo, Parma, Pavia, Piacenza*, Vicenza* F-Genoa, A-Siena, Padua, Perugia, Pisa V: Venice F-Dalmatia, A-Treviso, F-Venice, Friuli, Istria x: Autonomous Garrisoned fortified cities: G-Ferrara, G-Lucca, G-Mantua, G-Modena, G-Montferrat, G-Piombino, G-Ragusa, G-Saluzzo, G-Savoy, G-Trent, G-Turin Garrisoned fortressess*: G-Romagna, G-Spoleto**, G-Urbino Note: the suggestions below are not part of the original rules. 1 and 2-SC powers are very difficult to play. My suggestion is that you give all of those at least 2-3 starting units or that some players play 2 powers or that the small powers are neutral but can be ordered about secretly. Either you give players points for this each spring or you just execute the order that got most votes. * Ignore in play with Machiavelli 2 map. ** To Papacy (with no garrison) in play with Machiavelli 2 map. Note that the single letter abbreviations for the powers Milan, I, and Florence, L, are the second letter of the name rather than the first to avoid conflicts with the Master (GM) and France. Special rules: The fortresses are used in this scenario. Some are garrisoned. These provinces are impassable: Austria, Carinthia, Hungary and Tyrolea. Venice and Florence have two die rolls each for variable income. Aragon, Milan, France, Papacy and the Ottoman have each one die roll each for variable income. Aragon uses the Naples die roll. The player(s) controlling Naples or Genoa city gain one die roll per city for variable income. Genoa, Padua, Perugia, Pisa and Siena are *not* part of Milans home country. Bari, Naples, Aquila, Capua, Salerno are *not* part of France's home country, nor do they constitute a separate Neapolitan home country. There is no Neapolitan home country available for conquest. Note: In the original text it was not clear whether Naples was available for conquest as a home country. Machiavelli 2 To play with the Mach2 map give the Papacy Spoleto instead of Tivoli. Remove other provinces as necessary. Assume that the initial treasury is any surplus remaining after the initial maintenance costs, else it is zero. Note: In the original text there are no provisions for play with the Mach2 map and rules, nor for play with less powers/players. Default victory conditions: The first player to control at least 15 cities and have control of at least two power's original home countries (eg: his own and one other player's) is declared the winner. ----- * Avalon Hill, Machiavelli and Diplomacy are trademarks of Hasbro Inc.
