ITALY AT THE DEATH OF GIAN-GALEAZZO VISCONTI 1402 January 2nd 2005 By Gianni Vacca (Italia a la mort de Joan Galeas Visconti (1402)). Reproduced courtesy of Gianni Vacca. The Visconti Machiavelli scenario begins in 1402. Among all the men trying to unite the italian peninsula under one rule, Gian Galeazzo Visconti was without doubt the most able. But at his death, his successors were unable to avoid the breakup of the milanese duchy. This period was also one of opportunity for many a minor italian state to rise to be a major player. (Thus this scenario can easily accomodate more powers/players.) Machiavelli Classic Setup The powers and their initial starting locations and owned provinces are: S: Savoy A-Genova, F-Savoy, A-Swiss, A-Turin H: Holy Empire A-Austria, F-Carniola, A-Tyrol, Carinthia I: Milan A-Cremona, A-Milan, A-Pavia, Bergamo, Brescia*, Como, Fornovo Parma, Piacenza*, Pontremoli*, Verona, Vicenza* G-Perugia, G-Piombino, G-Siena G-Bologna, G-Pisa V: Venice F-Dalmatia, F-Durazzo, A-Padua, A-Treviso, G-Venice, Friuli Istria L: Florence A-Arezzo, A-Florence, Pistoia, Romagna* A-Bologna, A-Pisa N: Naples F-Marseille, Provence A-Bari, F-Naples, Aquila, Capua, Otranto, Salerno x: Autonomous Garrisoned fortified cities: G-Ancona, G-Ferrara, G-Lucca, G-Mantua, G-Messina, G-Modena, G-Montferrat, G-Palermo, G-Ragusa, G-Rome, G-Saluzzo, G-Trent Garrisoned fortressess: G-Tivoli * Ignore in play with Machiavelli 2 map. Note that the single letter abbreviations for Milan, I, and Florence, L, are the second letter of the name rather than the first to avoid conflicts with the Master (GM) and France. Special rules: The fortresses are used in this scenario. All unowned, except Patrimony, Spoleto and Urbino, are garrisoned. These provinces are impassable: Avignon, Hungary, Slavonia and Tunis. All powers have one die roll each for variable income. HRE uses the Austria die rolls, while Savoy uses the Genoa city roll. (Note: the original rules fail to mention this, but I have assumed this to be the most obvious case.) The player controlling Rome city gains one die roll for variable income. Bologna and Pisa are not part of any players home country. Optional setups: Five players Dump savoy. Add neutral garrisons in Genoa, Savoy and Turin. Swiss is impassable. OPTION: The player controlling Genoa city also gains one die roll for variable income. (This is not mentioned in the original rules.) Machiavelli 2 Assume that the initial treasury is any surplus remaining after the initial maintenance costs, else it is zero. Default victory conditions: The first player to control at least 15 cities and have control of at least two power's original home countries (eg: his own and one other player's) is declared the winner. ----- * Avalon Hill, Machiavelli and Diplomacy are trademarks of Hasbro Inc.
