THE END OF LOMBARD DOMINION December 31st 2004 Copyright Ludopress, Alea 22 page 11 (El fin del dominio lombardo). Published with permission. Note: the main goal of the scenario is historicity and not playability. The End Of Lombard Dominion Machiavelli scenario begins in 749. Italy is ruled by various Lombard successor/splinter states under weak or symbolic royal control. The Lombard king has invaded Byzantine Ravenna lands, but is forced to relinquish those due to Frankish (French) intervention at papal behest. In the south the Arabs continue their advance. Machiavelli Classic Setup The powers and their initial starting locations and owned provinces are: F: Franks F-Marseille, A-Provence, Avignon, Swiss B: Byzantium A-Bari, A-Bologna, F-Dalmatia, A-Ferrara, F-Messina, F-Naples, Otranto, Romagna*, Urbino A: Arabs F-Palermo, F-Tunis, Sardinia L: Lombards F-Genoa, A-Milan, A-Mantua, A-Parma, A-Pavia, Como, Cremona, Fornova, Montferrat, Piacenza*, Pontremoli, P: Papacy A-Rome, A-Perugia, Patrimony, Siena, Tivoli* V: Venice F-Istria, A-Padua, A-Treviso, F-Venice, Friuli T: Marquisate A-Florence, A-Modena, F-Pisa, Arezzo, Lucca, Piombino, of Tuscany Pistoia E: March of A-Trent, A-Tyrolea, A-Vicenza**, Austria, Bergamo, Verona Brescia*, Carinthia, Carniola, Verona x: Autonomous Garrisoned fortified cities: G-Ancona, G-Durazzo, G-Ragusa, G-Saluzzo, G-Savoy, G-Turin Garrisoned fortressess: G-Aquila, G-Spoleto, Note: the suggestions below are not part of the original rules. * Ignore in play with Machiavelli 2 map. ** Change to A-Verona in play with Machiavelli 2 map. Special rules: The fortresses are used in this scenario. Some are garrisoned. All powers have one die roll each for variable income. The Franks use France's roll, Byzantium use Naple's, The Lombards use Milan's, The Arabs use Turkey's, Tuscany use Florence's and Verona use Austria's. There is no Neapolitan home country available for conquest. No separate city variable income. The *first* time any non-lombard power (FBAPV) enters Ancona, Aquila or Spoleto, the Lombard (L) player has the option to pay 3 ducats only to buy the garrison units. If he does not he forfeits the option. Each *income phase* (the starting turn exempted) Tuscany and Verona must pay 3 ducats to Lombardy or get assassinated (as per normal rules) at the beginning of the spring turn. This goes on until any of them manage to assassinate the Lombard ruler. Note: the rules are unclear if it is enough with any assassination to avoid paying, or if each state must assassinate the Lombard ruler, or if as stated above. OPTION: Assassinations cost 6 ducats per 'die side', and you may buy *four* sides. I.e. success on a 1-4 roll ! Tuscany and Verona need only pay 3 ducats per die side to assassinate Lombardy. Note 1: It was not clear if Tuscany and Verona could pay 3 ducats to assassinate Lombardy only or any player. The former was assumed. Note 2: Notice that the player still have *one* assassination chit per power to use unless they trade with the other players !! Machiavelli 2 Assume that the initial treasury is any surplus remaining after the initial maintenance costs, else it is zero. Note: In the original text there are no provisions for play with the Mach2 map and rules, nor for play with less powers/players. Default victory conditions: The first player to control at least 15 cities and have control of at least two power's original home countries (eg: his own and one other player's) is declared the winner. ----- * Avalon Hill, Machiavelli and Diplomacy are trademarks of Hasbro Inc.
