The idea of the NS is to offer a set of game settings, alternate OOB and PDT files and modified scenarios in order to improve some of the aspects in which the BG system is flawed. This was started as a way to reduce some of the historicity problems of he game and to standarize some of the diverse modifications to OOB and PDT that were used.

The purpose is to become an "alternate standard" for the Napoleonic Wargaming Club. Many people will prefer to play with the standard settings, but we hope to find a number of players who want a more historical feeling for their battles: less blitzkrieg and massacres and more maneuver and morale breaking.

The main point is the low-morale approach. The current effective morale of BG units is too high, allowing the players to send decimated and highly fatigued units back into the fray, to kill and be killed. This (among other reasons) provokes battles with Away too high casualties. Historically the men would abandon the field before reaching these high casualty levels.

One way to reduce effective morale is not using the morale-boosting optional rules: flank morale bonus and rout limiting. This makes massive assaults more dangerous, since one rout can spread to a whole sector. It also favors rest and reorder of your units: leaving them in the front line means risking a rout spread that can open a big gap in your defence.
Another way is through OOB changes. The OOBs have been revised with that purpose in mind. We have also strived to assign to each unit a quality according to their historical record, when we could find it.

Other changes are:
- new battery types and a new fire table, with firepower a bit reduced for all classes.
- gun ammunition limitation. The Borodino scenarios have way too much ammo, allowing both sides to shoot non-stop all the battle, which increased greatly the casualties and forced players to adopt non-historical tactics (like massive assaults through the woods).
- change in VP for troops. They are set to 1 VP inf., 3 VP art., 5 VP cav. (inverted for Russians). This makes easier the use of cavalry; with the 8 VPs per loss its use was too restricted.

These game settings are to be used in all the games of the series (with the appropiate changes, such as the movement rates on snow for Eylau), offering a standard set of alternate conditions. We also want to offer one standard alternate OOB for each game, to avoid the current confusion with multiple OOBs.
The pack includes one set of suggested House Rules (based on NWC's HR). While we recommend their use, they are not a fundamental part of the system and it can be applied without them.
